Mad for Macarons? So Is Everybody Else

After Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette was released in 2006, people suddenly couldn’t get enough of the Queen’s favorite colorful confection: the macaron.

Macarons are brightly pigmented meringue sandwiches filled with buttercream. Popular in France and often outrageously priced, they’ve now become ubiquitous treats at trendy weddings.

Macarons are incredibly pretty; but they never taste as good as they look. They’re dry, chewy bitefulls of disappointment.

They have become so popular with brides-to-be that they even make macaron shaped ring boxes!

If you love macarons and have to have them at your wedding, take a note from Marie Antoinette and keep them to yourself. Let the rest of your peasant guests eat cake.

Macarons are popular at weddings because they are customizable. They can be made to match any color of bridesmaid’s dress… and we all know that brides love being matchy-matchy. We’ve found a few sugary alternatives, however, that can also be decorated to match your wedding hues:

1. Frosted Cookies Topped with Edible Glitter

Glitter elevates these sugar cookies from a snowy-day staple to a classy wedding desert. They are more colorful than AND more delicious than the fanciest of macarons.

2. White Chocolate Covered Oreos

Cover Oreos in chocolate and suddenly your favorite childhood dessert is grown up. White chocolate can also be color coordinated. (All it takes is food coloring, people.)

3. Pavlovas

If you must have meringue at your wedding reception, try serving a Pavlova. It’s a decadent Australian dessert that’s filled with cream or fruit. It’s just like a macaron—but a little more unique.

4. Whoopie Pies

Whoopie pies are delicious cake sandwiches. On first glance, they could be confused for a macaron… but they’re bigger, and infinitely more delicious.

Still craving macarons now that you know that every bride will be serving those chalky pastries at their wedding? We didn’t think so.  Remember, just because Marie Antoinette lost her head over those pastel pretties doesn’t mean that you have to!
